Rising star Leyana wins a national award for being the student in the workplace

A Derby graduate who helped organised the UK’s biggest free health and wellbeing event has won a national award for displaying excellence in the workplace – while she was still studying for her degree.

Leyana Akbani, 21, the business development manager at Derby firm Unlimited Wellbeing, beat off a host of hopefuls to win a Highly Commended award in the Commercial Impact Off Campus category at the finals of the Student Employee of the Year Award 2018.

She picked up the prize after judges agreed that Leyana, who has just graduated with first class honours in her BA (Hons) degree in Business and Human Resources Management at Sheffield Hallam University, had made a significant contribution to helping Unlimited Wellbeing exploit new opportunities and develop enterprising ideas.

In particular she helped the company to organise and host a huge health and wellbeing event at Derby County’s Pride Park stadium, which was first of its kind in the UK and attracted thousands of people who tried out new therapies and learned more about health organisations and wellbeing products.

The Student Employee of the Year awards are organised and promoted by the National Association of Student Employment Services and Leyana was one of hundreds of students from around 80 higher education institutions to have taken part.

She is now employed full time at Unlimited Wellbeing, having impressed the company’s CEO Sanjiv Corepal and everyone else working at the Pride Park-based firm.

She said: “I’m thrilled to have won the award, it’s an amazing honour and I’m very proud of what I have achieved.

“Working at Unlimited Wellbeing meant that I had to balance employment with studying for my degree, which involved a lot of hard work and plenty of sacrifices but it’s been totally worth it.

“I’ve learned loads along the way but the most important lesson is that no matter who you are or what your role is it’s possible to make a significant contribution to your employer if you’re motivated and doing a job you love.”

Dave Leverton, chief operations officer at Unlimited Wellbeing, said: “We are all incredibly proud of Leyana for what she has achieved.

“Since joining Unlimited Wellbeing she has become a key member of the team and is integral to our success and growth.

“She is an exceptionally talented young woman with a very bright future ahead of her and winning the national Student Employee of the Year award 2018 is an incredible achievement and a fitting reward for all her hard work and integrity.”

Launched earlier this year, Unlimited Wellbeing’s website gives professionals an online presence and marketing support, allowing users to search for suitable providers and rate their experiences.
